Your roadmap to returning to duty

We believe in complete transparency. Here is exactly what you can expect as we work together to get you back on the job.

 The initial evaluation

Your journey begins with a comprehensive, face-to-face clinical assessment with one of our certified Substance Abuse Professionals. We will take the time to listen, understand your unique situation, and determine the appropriate level of care required to meet federal guidelines.

Your tailored treatment plan

Based on your initial evaluation, your SAP will recommend a specific plan of treatment and/or education. We will send a formal report of these recommendations directly to your employer, keeping the process moving forward.

The follow-up evaluation

Once you have completed your recommended program, you will meet with your SAP again. During this clinical follow-up, we will verify that you have successfully complied with the plan and achieved the necessary clinical milestones.

Clearance for testing

When your SAP determines your treatment was successful, we will issue a report of compliance to your employer. At that point, your employer can order your official return-to-duty drug or alcohol test, clearing the way for you to resume your safety-sensitive duties.

Frequently asked questions

What exactly is a Substance Abuse Professional (SAP)?

A SAP is a licensed or certified credentialed professional who evaluates employees who have violated DOT drug and alcohol regulations. They are responsible for making recommendations concerning education, treatment, follow-up testing, and aftercare, acting as a crucial gatekeeper for transportation safety.

How long will the entire process take?

The timeline is unique to every individual. It depends heavily on the specific education or treatment recommendations outlined in your initial evaluation, as well as how quickly you are able to complete those required steps. Our goal at MindShift is to ensure you never experience unnecessary delays on our end.

Can my employer fire me before I finish the SAP process?

While DOT regulations require you to complete the SAP process before performing safety-sensitive duties for any employer, the decision to retain or terminate your employment is strictly a company personnel decision. Completing the SAP evaluation does not guarantee your specific employer will return you to work, but it is a mandatory step to ever working in a DOT-regulated role again.

What happens after I return to work?

Once you successfully pass your employer's return-to-duty test and resume your role, you will be subject to an ongoing follow-up testing plan designed by your SAP. DOT regulations require a minimum of six unannounced tests over the first twelve months, though your SAP may prescribe a longer testing period to support your continued
